BOKAKHAT: In the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, the main Opposition party, the Indian National Congress, is gearing up for a fierce contest in the newly-reconstituted Khumtai constituency. Congress ticket aspirants were seen actively engaging in public outreach across villages in the constituency.

It is noteworthy that with the recent delimitation, a large portion of the former Khumtai constituency has been merged into the newly-formed Dergaon constituency. In exchange, parts of the former Sarupathar constituency, particularly the Morongi Development Block, have been added to Khumtai. The reconstituted Khumtai now includes 11 Gaon Panchayats from the Kathalguri Development Block and 11 Gaon Panchayats from the Morongi Development Block, bringing the total voter base to over one lakh.

With the upcoming elections in sight, Congress ticket aspirants are actively continuing their outreach efforts. Among the prominent names vying for the Congress ticket are Roselina Tirkey, Executive Vice-President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and former MLA, Dipanwita Duwara, former President of Golaghat District Mahila Congress and Vice-President of APCC’s Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan, Diganta Bailung, spokesperson of Golaghat District Congress, Paran Saikia, young entrepreneur and Vice-President of the APCC’s OBC Cell, Zidan Ayeng, President of Morongi Block Congress, along with retired spokesperson Tonak Kamal Gogoi, Bijit Saikia, Mausumi Rabha Charangia, and Chandan Goswami

These individuals declared themselves strong contenders for the party ticket and have been carrying out grassroots political activities and public relations campaigns ward by ward.

On the other hand, young businessman Paran Saikia was seen visiting different parts of the constituency, interacting with the public and extending support in resolving various local issues.

To secure the party ticket, aspirants are employing different strategies to gain the confidence of the top Congress leadership. However, there is a strong possibility that the Indian National Congress may field a woman candidate from Khumtai in the 2026 Assembly election, despite demands from many senior and junior Congress workers in the area for a strong male candidate.

So far, around 10 ticket aspirants have emerged in Khumtai and have been seen engaging actively with the public. Although Roselina Tirkey has not yet clearly stated whether she will contest from Sarupathar or Khumtai, given the high concentration of tea tribe voters in Khumtai, she is being seen as a strong contender there.
