MANGALDAI: Taking over as the 25th Superintendent of Police of Darrang district on May 18, Er Sushanta Biswa Sarma has geared up the district police against anti-social elements and organized gang of drug peddlers, illegal traders of ganja, land mafia, gamblers and smugglers of IMFL and illicit country liquor.
Within three days of joining the district, he made a personal visit to the pre-historic Shiva Temple at Dhalpur hill and witnessing the encroachment of temple land, he asked the encroachers to vacate the encroached land. And significantly, the encroachers vacated the land on their own will. As the large stretch of riverine char areas of River Brahmaputra has often been unattended due to many reasons, prominently being lack of proper connectivity, some anti-social criminal elements have reportedly indulged in criminal activities like land grabbing, child marriage, cattle lifting and robbery.
With the intention to make the char areas in the district a crime-free zone and to take the police and administration to the peace-loving poor villagers living in the char areas, Superintendent of Police Er Sushanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday and Sunday made a visit to the remote char areas, namely Satihera, Arikati, Mowamari, Hetou No.1 (Nepali Sar), Hetou No. 2, Bangalpota, Monitari on a mechanized country boat. During his visit, he closely interacted with the villagers and assured to extend all possible help to the peace-loving poor villagers irrespective of their religion, caste or language. He also appealed to the people of the char areas to extend all cooperation to the police.
"Enough exploitation has already been done to the common people by the so-called 'Dewanis'. In the greater interest of the common people living in the remote and isolated char areas, it is the need of the hour to say no to 'Dewani Raj," said Superintendent of Police Er Sushanta Biswa Sarma while talking to The Sentinel on Sunday afternoon. He also appealed to the poor farmers of the char areas to take the organic way of cultivation taking the suggestions from the Agriculture department. Senior journalists Bhargab Kumar Das, Ganesh Dutta, Hitesh Hazarika, advocate Momin Ahmed and deputy adviser of Village Defense Organization, Mukut Saikia also accompanied Er Sushanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to the char areas.
