Death in police encounters: Assam ranks third

Assam ranks third in the country for cases registered in respect of death in police encounters.

GUWAHATI: Assam ranks third in the country for cases registered in respect of death in police encounters.

According to information provided by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) showing the year-wise and state-wise number of cases registered about custodial death and encounter death from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022, Assam registered 18 cases of death in police encounters in 2021-22. The highest number was registered by Jammu and Kashmir (45) and second highest number of cases by Chhattisgarh (30). In 2020-21, Assam had registered four cases of death in police encounters.

Among the other north-eastern states, Manipur registered only one case in 2021-22, Meghalaya two cases while Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura did not register any case in 2021-22. On the other hand, Assam registered 22 cases of custodial deaths in 2021-22. Arunachal Pradesh registered two cases, Manipur 1, Meghalaya 13 cases, Mizoram 8, Nagaland 9 and Tripura 6. In 2020-21, Assam registered 19 cases of custodial death.
