LAKHIMPUR: In order to demand the establishment of cold storage in the district, the Lakhimpur district unit of the Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) launched a mass signature campaign on Saturday.

The organization kicked off the campaign at KB Road just in front of the office premises and it will continue until October 28. The programme will be conducted in various parts of the district in order to collect mass signature in support of the demand. Then the organization will submit memorandum to the State Agriculture Minister for the immediate establishment of the cold storage in the district.

Due to the non-availability of cold storage in agro-economy based Lakhimpur district, the farmers’ community faces a lot of problems. Under such circumstances, the farmers have to sell their hard-earned harvest for nominal prices. Yet the successive State governments have taken no initiative to establish a cold storage.

Though the Lakhimpur unit AYM has raised consecutive demands for the same since a long time, it has not proved to be effective. So the organization has been compelled to initiate the programme with a view to mitigate the crucial problem of the district.

AYM central committee organizing secretary Anupam Saikia, Lakhimpur district president Chiranjit Bordoloi, along with many other activists of the organization took part in the programme on Saturday.
