JAGIROAD: The elite section of Jagiroad have demanded shifting of dry fish market from Jagiroad township to some nearby areas. It is alleged that the unscientific expansion of the dry fish market amidst the heart of the town has caused severe pollution hazards. The deep smell of decomposed dry fish engulfing the entire township has violated the fundamental rights of the citizen here. It is further alleged that the dry fish laden huge trucks occupying the busy station road have caused danger to other vehicular traffics and pedestrians.

It is learnt that the loading and unloading of dry fish are usually carried out on the busy railway station road under the very nose of the concerned department. It is also alleged that the dogs and crows carry the rotten dry fish to far flung areas causing threat to the surrounding environment. The unscientific dry fish market here has no proper drainage and sanitary system which causes harm to the locality. On the other hand the local people including school goers use the road for Nakhola High School, post office and BSNL office in addition to the railway station. This is very dangerous as the dry fish laden trucks allegedly occupy the entire station road during market days.

The dry fish market having rupees of several crores turnover every week is exempted from the purview of the GST and as such government is not earning any revenue from such huge transactions.

Earlier, the market was under the coverage of sale tax department and the Government earned revenue. The concerned section here urged upon the district administration to shift the market to some nearby areas and develop the Asia famous dry fish market in a scientific way.
