Dhalpur police firing: Inquiry commission cross-examines former DC

MANGALDAI: The one-man inquiry commission headed by Justice (retd) B D Agarwal on the Dhalpur police firing cross examined former Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah on Thursday.

In this connection, a sitting was held here at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall. Later talking to the media, chairman of the Commission, Justice (retd) Agarwal said that the actual inquiry has begun from this sitting where oral evidence of the witness was recorded and legal term of ‘cross examination’ was done. Pranab Kumar Sarmah was cross examined following his written statement which has brought more clarity to the incident.

In the next sitting, the commission will call the then Deputy Commissioner Prabhati Thousen for cross examination and this process is to follow for few other administrative and police officials. “In the next date, the Deputy Commissioner at the time of the incident will be called for cross examination. Similarly, few other civil and police officials are also to be cross examined in the process,” Justice Agarwal added.

The State Government constituted the commission on the first of October, 2021 to ascertain the circumstances leading to the police firing on September 23, 2021 during an eviction drive at Dhalpur under Sipajhar Revenue Circle resulting in the death of two persons and injury to several persons. The Commission so far has received as many as 52 memoranda/ written statements from the victims, government officials and other stakeholders. Darrang Deputy Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey and Secretary to the Commission, Dr Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika were also present during the sitting.
