DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) has issued an order banning the open sale and advertisement of gutka and other tobacco products near hospitals, educational institutions, religious places, and the DTP Dyke.
The prohibition extends to a 100-meter radius around healthcare facilities, schools, colleges, temples, mosques, churches, and the popular recreational area of DTP Dyke. The DMC Enforcement Team, in collaboration with its License Branch, will conduct regular inspections and surprise checks. Violators of the order will face a Rs 10,000 fine, confiscation of prohibited products, and possible suspension or cancellation of trade licenses for repeat offences.
“This measure is necessary to protect public health, uphold the decorum of religious and educational institutions, and maintain a clean and safe environment across Dibrugarh,” said an official of DMC. This moves comes under the framework of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
