Dibrugarh: In response to the loud and vocal protests by the AASU unit of the Dibrugarh University against the recent move of DU to hike its fee for the new academic year by 15 per cent, the authorities concerned reduced the raise to 5 per cent.

In a press meet held on July 24, it was informed by the president and general secretary of the unit, namely Ankur Pratim Gogoi and Devraj Goswami, that Registrar (in-charge) of DU, Dr. Prashanta Kakati and chairman of the Development Council of DU, Dr. Rupam Saikia had, respecting the demands of AASU, reduced the proposed hike.

Earlier, the said move had drawn severe flak from the students’ unit which termed the move elitist and observed that the same would deprive scores of meritorious students from humble backgrounds from getting themselves enrolled with DU. In the meeting, it was also exasperatedly stated that due to the failure of the authorities of DU to make adequate hostel arrangements for its students, around 50 per cent of them were forced to go for rented accommodations outside the campus.
