Discussion and decisions on crucial issues will be top priority: AASU general secretary

LAKHIMPUR: The 4-day general meet of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) commenced at Taburam Taid Samanway Kshetra at Jonai from Wednesday in a befitting manner.

The crucial event of the largest student organization of the State was organized under the aegis of its Dhemaji district unit in association with Jonai subdivisional and regional bodies along with the people of Jonai subdivison. The four day-long agenda of the event will conclude on October 26 with the open session. The organization has held the event with a view to accelerating its activities with more intensity and speed than they are at present, to lead the State and the Assamese community with strength and all-round empowerment and to propel the dynamism of activities of the organization with more strength and capabilities.

In this regard, AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, while contacted, said that the organization would hold special discussion on several crucial issues of the State in the event.

“Generally, we give priority to the academic environment of the State in the discussions held in our programmes, be it our time-bound session or general meet. Along with education, the crucial issues causing tremendous threat to the State will be our top priorities in this Jonai general meet,” he stated.

In connection he informed that fruitful discussion would be held in the event to chalk out strategies to lead the students of the State with pursuance of knowledge in the real sense and to enhance their research-level works. In this regard, the organization would pay importance to taking encouraging and helpful decisions for the betterment of the students belonging to economically backward families. He further stated that the current sensitive issues causing threat to the identity of the Assamese community would also be discussed.

“In the event, we will hold discussion on the identity crisis of the Assamese community, threats to the Assamese language, literature, culture as well as to that of the indigenous communities of the State. Similarly, priority will be given to discussion on the agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, big river dams, non-ethical politics and communalism. Our democratic fight will be intensified against these issues as per resolutions taken in the meet,” he asserted. He further added that the organization would also lay stress on the discussion to work for ushering in peace, harmony and integration among all the communities of the State.

The first day’s agenda of the event began with a massive cleaning and plantation drive on Wednesday. It was followed by the inauguration of the main gate of the Taburam Taid Samanway Kshetra, main pandal, Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Open Stage, Muranghar, Khargeswar Talukdar Memorial Martyr Park, book fair and exhibition by a galaxy of noted personalities. The registration of delegates was followed by the inauguration of the Tarun Chandra Pamegam Memorial Delegates’ Camp and a cultural programme in the evening. The central body executive meet commenced from 9 pm. The main programmes of the event will be held from Thursday.
