Dibrugarh: A total of 24 destitute and mentally challenged persons, including 5 women, were rescued from different locations of Dibrugarh town on Thursday by Dibrugarh district administration with the help of social welfare department.
Out of those rescued, 17 men were sent to the temporary shelter home for men set up at Khanikar and the five women were sent to the Sakhi-One Stop Centre and North East Buddhist Cultural Association’s rehabilitation centre at Milannagar and Boiragimath, after conducting necessary medical examination.
The whole drive was carried out under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh, Nandita Baruah with the aim to provide proper shelter and food to the homeless and mentally challenged people who would otherwise have to face severe hardships during the lockdown period.
Later, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and Superintendent of Police Sreejith T visited the shelter home for men at Khanikar and took stock of the arrangements being made at the centre by social welfare department.
