DHUBRI: Two alleged cattle smugglers sustained bullet injuries in an encounter with police in River Brahmaputra near Majherchar area of Dhubri District in the wee hours on Friday. The injured were admitted in Dhubri Civil Hospital and are undergoing treatment, a police source said.
Talking to mediapersons, Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Gurav informed that Dhubri Police had information that through the Brahmaputra, cattle were being transported by boat by crossing the international border. Accordingly, the ambush party identified a boat laden with cattle.
"When police party signaled to stop the boat, the alleged smugglers, instead of stopping, hit the police boat hard and damaged it," said Gurav. He further added, "To save ourselves, in self defence we had to fire 13 rounds but the smugglers fled to the nearest Majherchar area." Eight cattle were seized in the operation, the SP said.
