SILCHAR: In a fatal accident, an endangered spectacled leaf monkey was knocked to death by a motorcycle near Dorgakona, close to Assam University in Silchar. The mishap took place when the monkey, which had been part of a group of monkeys seen near the roadside, strayed onto the road and was mowed down by the two-wheeler. Eyewitnesses reported that the animal succumbed to its injuries within minutes.

According to Professor Parthankar Choudhury from the ecology department at Assam University, the area surrounding the university is home to various monkey species. While some are commonly seen, the spectacled leaf monkey, also known as Phayre's leaf monkey, is classified as rare and endangered. These monkeys inhabit specific regions in south Assam and Tripura, including the Sepahijola Wildlife Sanctuary.

Professor Choudhury also stressed the importance of this incident by asserting that the loss of even one of this threatened species is concerning. The spectacled leaf monkey is threatened by habitat loss, encroachment by people, and a dwindling population, making it imperative to conserve the species.

This event underscores the persistent struggle of wildlife in urban regions and the necessity for heightened awareness and protective measures to safeguard endangered species. The spectacled leaf monkey's death is a reminder of the fragile balance between human activity and wildlife conservation in the area.
