On Thursday 23 December, a Giraffe died in the Assam State Botanical Garden cum Zoo located in Assam's Guwahati. The female Giraffe was found dead on Thursday night at around 10:30 pm.
Reportedly, the Giraffe was brought from Mysore in the year 2020 along with one other Giraffe named 'Bijoy' died a year after being kept in Guwahati Zoo.
It was suspected by the Zoo authorities that the Giraffe might have died for her head getting stuck inside the railings of her cage during the time she was having her meal.
The Giraffe has been sent for post mortem and other medical investigations to find out the main cause of death which is ascertained.
The workers employed in the Zoo alleged that the tragic death of the female Giraffe is due to the negligence and irresponsibility of Ashwini Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer.
According to reports, the Giraffe was brought from one of the Zoos of Mysore named Chamarajendra in the year 2020 and kept in the Assam State Botanical Garden cum Zoo located in Guwahati. Even the workers received the information lately after the Giraffe took her last breath yesterday.
It was after eight years that three Giraffes were brought into the Zoo of Assam of which two were from Mysore and one from Patna.
From the Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan also called Sanjay Gandhi Botanical and Zoological Garden or Patna Zoo located in Patna, two female Giraffe was brought to Assam's Zoo two years ago in 2019 as a part of an exchange programme.
The Central Zoo Authority of Delhi gave its approval over the exchange programme. The Giraffe that died last night was among the two female Giraffe brought from Mysore as a part of an exchange programme.
A Giraffe has been bought after eight years to Assam State Botanical Garden cum Zoo as stated by Tejas Mariswamy, the Divisional Forest Officer.
