DIGBOI : The oldest oil installation of the country Digboi Refinery had a narrow escape following a fire accident that caught up in a drain bordering the refinery wall here on Sunday afternoon. Notably, the drain carrying inflammable sewage close to refinery wall near New Market came under a mammoth fire for the reason yet to be unearthed.
The pro active and timely interference of Digboi police and AOD fire service prevented the fire to spread its disastrous jaws which otherwise could have proved menace for the people and property in Digboi. “A large scale devastation was averted by the grace of god and assistance of Digboi police and fire tenders,” said an eye witness running an stationery in the market.
Though the exact reason of the fire could not be ascertained, yet it was suspected to be an irrational act of miscreants.
According to panic-gripped passers-by, the AOD’s growing negligence and lack of security administration to ensure strict regulations of safety measures in and around the vulnerable locations having open drain in the township have resulted in such incidents which is not new to Digboi.
It is pertinent to add here that based on the media report published earlier in September 13, the AOD authority had swung into action and evicted all the junk-foods stalls posing high risk to refinery and inflammable drains from the vicinity of the refinery.
Several incidents of fire were reported over a period of time from various locations of the oil town connected with a network of pipelines and drains with inflammable contents.
The indifferent attitude of the Digboi AOD management towards the maintenance aspects is very well reflected in the form of drains and nullahs which remain uncovered and falls within the easy rich of the passers-by. The unplanned drainage system of the muncipal board, its poor maintainence across the town and lack of proper parking space in the township have also been accountable to some extents leading to occurance of such unpleasant incidents.
