Former Assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi cremated with State honours

SIVASAGAR: Former Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly and sitting Congress MLA Pranab Kumar Gogoi was cremated with full state honours at Hahchara Jathipatia village in Sivasagar district on Wednesday in presence of relatives, leaders from political parties and scores of his admirers and party workers.

His mortal remains were consigned to flames by his three sons Manjir, Sameer and Prameer at 2 PM amidst gun salute by Assam Police personnel. Hundreds of mourners converged at the cremation site to bid final farewell to the 84-year-old Congress stalwart who passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Monday night.

Leaders of various political parties and organizations laid wreaths on the mortal remains and a gun salute was given before the last rites. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain, BJP leaders, administrative officials, including Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Dr. MS Lakshmi Priya, were among those present.

Earlier, wrapped in the national flag, the mortal remains of Gogoi were brought to his residence located at Red Cross Road on Tuesday night at around 7 PM. People from various walks of life, including party workers, BJP Sivasagar district president Surabhi Rajkowari, social workers, administrative officials, representatives of the business organizations and common people paid floral tributes to the departed soul.

Before being taken to Hahchara Jathipatia on Wednesday, the mortal remains were taken to Rajiv Bhavan and Sibsagar Bar Association where Congress workers and members of the bar association offered their last respects.
