TEZPUR: In a significant development on Wednesday, Ranjita Sinha Dutta, daughter of former Tezpur MP and eminent Janata Dal leader Late Dr Purna Narayan Singha, reconnected with the Janata Dal (United) at its Seven Jantar Mantar head office in New Delhi and contacted National Secretary Mohammad Nisar. She joined the party as a member, expressing her commitment to follow in her father’s footsteps and revive the values and goodwill once associated with Janata Dal in Assam.
At present, the Janata Dal holds little to no political ground in Assam particularly in the Sonitpur district. Since the passing of Dr Purna Narayan Sinha in 2001, the people of Tezpur and Sonitpur have come to associate the party solely with his name and leadership. Once regarded as a platform for sincere, principled, and capable leaders, the party has since struggled to retain its identity and relevance.
While Janata Dal (United) is led nationally by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the party’s position in Assam stands in stark contrast. In Sonitpur especially, internal issues and the influence of a single individual have reportedly pushed the organization toward a state of disarray. Local supporters now view this as a major roadblock to any future revival of the party.
Dr Purna Narayan Singha was instrumental in laying the foundation of the Janata Dal in Assam and played a key role in strengthening its presence during his lifetime. He remains etched in public memory as one of the party’s most respected founding figures in the state. Even today, the mention of Janata Dal in Sonitpur immediately evokes his name.
Ranjita Sinha Dutta stated that her objective was to rebuild the trust and foundation her father once laid, and to work for the welfare of the people of Assam and Sonitpur with the same dedication and integrity that marked Dr Sinha’s political career.
