Gauhati University’s Law College Hosts Interactive Seminar on Alternative Dispute Resolution

Gauhati University's Law College, organized a seminar on ADR to promote awareness of its efficiency, flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and time-saving benefits in achieving fair justice.

Guwahati: An engaging seminar on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) was held today in the Phanidhar Dutta Lecture Hall at Gauhati University by the University Law College. Prof. Utpal Sarma, Registrar of Gauhati University, Hon. Mr. Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma, Former Judge of the Gauhati High Court, and Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Hon. Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University, graced the seminar with their august presence.

The use of ADR mechanisms to settle conflicts outside of conventional judicial systems has grown in popularity. Gauhati University's University Law College has made the effort to raise knowledge of this tool since it is efficient, adaptable, cost-effective, and time-saving in delivering fair justice.

The Gauhati University Anthem opened the program, and then the lamp was ceremoniously lit. In his statement introducing the event, Hon. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta emphasised the importance of the native and indigenous ADR systems that are used throughout Northeastern India. Additionally, he highlighted the beauty of the indigenous ADR systems, which have maintained peace and balance in the area.

A respected jurist with extensive knowledge of arbitration, mediation, and other conflict resolution procedures, Mr. Justice B.K. Sarma, highlighted the increasing importance of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the contemporary legal system. He also discussed the benefits of ADR and related his personal experiences. Additionally, he popularised the ADR system by quoting Mahatma Gandhi and Abraham Lincoln. He emphasised the several legislation as well as the various parts and articles, including Articles 39(A), 226, and 131 of the Indian Constitution and parts 80 and 89 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.

Inspiring audiences to embrace alternative dispute resolution (ADR) as a revolutionary tool for justice delivery, Justice Sarma's thought-provoking speech included real-life experiences and practical insights referencing many key judgements on ADR methods. In his enlightening lecture, Dr. Dipankar Das, Principal in-charge of Gauhati University's University Law College, welcomed the audience and emphasised the value of alternative dispute resolution.
