BARPETA: The post of Deka Xatriya in Barpeta Xatra was lying vacant since the last six months after the demise of the 15th Deka Xatriya of Barpeta Xatra, Nabajit Das Pathak. On Monday, voting was conducted to elect the new Deka Xatriya.
Total five candidates contested in the election. They are Hemen Atoi, Burha Bhakat, Burhabhakat Barpeta Xatra; Goutam Pathak, chief pathak of Barpeta Xatra; Dr Babul Ch Das, retired professor, MC College, Barpeta; Uddhab Ch Das, retired tax officer, and Manoranjan Das. Among them, Goutam Pathak won by a margin of 136 votes. He has now become the Deka Xatriya of Barpeta Xatra.
