Assam Govt Decision: Madrassa's, Sanskrit Schools to be shut down soon - Education Minister

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had chaired a meeting of the Assam Council of Ministers (CoM) on Sunday, December 13, in Guwahati where several important decisions were taken. One of them was the closing of all assam government-run madrassas & Sanskrit schools (tols), and a bill in this regard will be tabled during the winter session of the State Assembly.

"Existing laws related to madrassas and Sanskrit schools (tols) will be repealed. A bill will be introduced in the next session of the Assembly," said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary,

The winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will begin from December 28, 2020.

The following decisions were taken in the meeting of the Assam Council of Ministers:

• The holiday list for the year 2021 was approved by the Cabinet. General holidays will be 34 days and restricted holidays will be 31 days.

• The Cabinet approved rehabilitation provision of erosion affected people. Grant will be provided in three categories i.e. Rs 5 lakh, Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh.

• Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) for the tea tribes at a determined cost per year will be set up.

• Formulation of Medical College and Hospital Critical Care Service Rule.

• The Cabinet decided to change nomenclature' of 'Miri' to 'Mishing'.

• "Assam Mala: Simplification of land provision" has been approved for direct purchasing of land.

• Micro Financial Institutions to be under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

• Cabinet decided to introduce Repeal of Provisions of Madrassas and Sanskrit Tols Act in next session of Assembly.

• Agricultural Income Tax Holidays for 3 years has been approved.

• The Cabinet approved the New Policy for Agarwood Cultivation.

• Under Ease of doing business, provision for private educational institutions to take online permissions will be introduced.

Earlier in October, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that all the government- run madrassas would be converted to high schools and new admissions would be held for existing students as regular ones.
