GUWAHATI: After a video was released that distorted the Chief Minister's speech, another attack occurred within just seven days. Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, disclosed a worrying incident on January 9th. Unauthorized hackers attempted to breach his Facebook account as per the statement made by him. It is believed that this cyber attack was initiated from Pakistan; however, further investigation still needs to be carried out. The revelation was made through X social media platform where he emphasized the seriousness of the issue at hand.
According to an online post by CM Sarma, my Facebook account was targeted for hacking this evening. The perpetrators are believed to be from Pakistan based on initial findings and investigations are ongoing. This occurrence happened a day after the Chief Minister uncovered a counterfeit video being circulated on social media that misrepresented his speech.
Chief Minister Sarma sounded the alarm on January 8, alerting everyone to a manipulated video intended to defame him and spread misinformation. He expressed his fears about certain vested groups with criminal motives trying to create disharmony in society by stirring up communal conflicts. As elections approach, Sarma pledged that these elements would face legal consequences for their actions under the law's purview.
The Chief Minister's speech was distorted in a fake video, leading to an immediate response from GP Singh - the Director General of Police for Assam. In reply to Sarma's post regarding this matter, DGP Singh provided assurance that "CID Assam would register a criminal case and investigate people behind", duly acknowledging the issue at hand.
The recent ordeal of trying to hack the Chief Minister's Facebook account has heightened worries about online security and disinformation campaigns against politicians.
