LUMDING: During a major operation, a concerted effort between Customs Department and Lumding Police resulted in the seizure of huge quantities of illegally imported foreign cigarettes, effectively hindering an illicit trade route. The operation was carried out on the busy National Highway 27 route where a truck registered as AS 01 MC 8831 was intercepted by authorities.
The seizure took place on the Silchar-Lumding road, where authorities found 480 cartons of Burmese-origin cigarettes hidden in the cargo of the truck. The smuggled items were said to be coming from Sonari Haat in Silchar, and the destination was Guwahati for distribution.
The vehicle driver, Rahan Hussain Laskar, was arrested on the spot and is now under police custody. The law enforcement has now begun probing the large smuggling ring, looking to arrest more people involved in the supply chain and find out the origin of the contraband.
Lumding's strategic position, with its railway access and the vital NH-27, has become a hotspot for smuggling contraband. In response to this, the authorities have stepped up their vigilance and enforcement activities to check the movement of illicit goods through these key transit points. The successful operation highlights the efforts being made to check smuggling and ensure public health and safety in the area.
