GUWAHATI: The much-awaited 1st Guwahati Asian Film Festival (GAFF) is to open with In the Arms of the Tree, an Iranian film directed by Babak Khajehpasha. The film is Iran's official submission for the 97th Academy Awards and will open the festival, scheduled from February 7 to 9, 2025. This powerful film on family turmoil and resilience will be an emotional opener to the event.

GAFF 2025 is going to be an interesting mix of films from Turkey, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, and China. The festival looks to celebrate the diversity of Asian cinema by giving filmmakers the opportunity to present their stories to the world.

Besides the international films, there will be two special sections of the festival: Indian Showcase, to celebrate the diversity of Indian cinema, and Northeast India Competition Section, which will showcase the rising stars of the region.

GAFF is not just a film festival, it's a place where cultures connect and dialogue takes place," said Festival Director Monita Borgohain. "With a rich selection of films and a focus on Indian and North Eastern cinema, GAFF is a vibrant platform for filmmakers and cinephiles alike," Borgohain said.

Film enthusiasts and industry professionals will get screenings, interactive panel discussions, and opportunities to network. Some of the most renowned figures have been included on the festival's advisory board, which lists film critics Srinivasa Santhanam and Utpal Borpujari among others.
