KOKRAJHAR: Former chief of BTC Hagrama Mohilary on Friday conveyed his greetings to the people of the region on the auspicious occasion of celebration of International Mother Language Day and called upon all to save Bodo mother language.

In his official site, Mohilary wrote, “Our language is our soul: A Bodo journey of tears, triumph and tomorrow. Today, as the world celebrates International Mother Language Day, our hearts beat with pride and ache with memory. For us, this day isn’t just about words, it’s about the soul of our Bodo people, carried for generations in the rhythm of our mother tongue. A language that colonial winds tried to silence, that history nearly erased. But we fought. We bled. We refused to let our voice die.” According to him, the decades-long battle of elders whispering stories in mothers' hushed lullabies that their children might never hear in school came to an end in 2003. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) accord was more than ink on paper and it was justice roaring back.

“Our Bodo language finally etched into the eighth schedule of India’s Constitution, a sacred recognition of Bodo as one of India’s 22 official languages. That day, our ancestors’ tears turned to triumph. But recognition is not resurrection. Our Bodo tongue still trembles in classrooms where textbooks gather dust, in villages where youth drift towards other tongues. We cannot let our children forget the words that built our mountains, rivers, and dreams,” he said adding that this Mother Language Day, the Bodos as a community should not just celebrate the day but to pledge, to teach, to speak and to scream their language into the future. For every indigenous tongue fighting extinction, your voice is a universe. Let’s save them all, he added.
