Sivasagar: A joint operation by Ahom Sena, Ujoni Asom Tholuwa Muslim Kalyan Parishad, Asomiya Yuva Mancha, and concerned locals led to the rescue of 15 cows allegedly being transported for illegal slaughter in a Bolero pick-up truck at Pragati Chariali on National Highway 37.
The vehicle, bearing registration number AS 03 CC 6399, was stopped after suspicions were raised about the inhumane transport conditions — overcrowding, lack of ventilation, and extreme heat. The driver claimed the cows were being sent to his employer for rearing, but residents expressed strong doubts about the legitimacy of the transport, especially amid ongoing restrictions under the Cow Protection Act and the state’s beef ban.
Eyewitnesses stated the animals were purchased from Rajmai market and en route to Kakajan. Protesters at the scene condemned the recurring violations of cattle transport laws and demanded immediate legal action against the alleged cattle smuggling network.
Authorities have been urged to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure enforcement of animal protection laws to prevent further illegal activities.
