Dibrugarh: The district administration has decided to come down heavily on illegal occupation of footpaths by the likes of street vendors. A team led by Additional DC, Ranjit Konwar, toured through many such places in the town on Saturday. After the visits, the authority is likely to devise a plan to free the places from unlawful occupation. The issue has become a menace here. In almost all major roads like RKB Path, HS Road, and various stretches of NH-37, different kinds of commercial establishments, including tea shops and the ones selling electronic items and other kinds of wares, have cropped up on the footpaths, thereby causing inconvenience to the pedestrians.

The problem becomes all the more severe in the footpaths running along NH-37. People obstructed by the vendors are often seen taking the national highway teeming with fast-moving traffic. Many pedestrians have expressed their anger and disappointment over such actions which even have the potential to put their lives at risk.
