GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts of Assam between July 1 and 7. The weather activity is being driven by a low-pressure system over coastal Gangetic West Bengal and a related cyclonic circulation, expected to impact the region over the coming days.
Thunderstorms with lightning and isolated heavy rain are likely in many areas, while moderate showers are expected at several locations. Despite the rain, maximum temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.
Rainfall has already been recorded in parts of Goalpara, Gossaigaon, Bijni, Chandubi, and Sonari, with daily totals ranging from 1 to 5 cm. In the last 24 hours, light to moderate rain was observed, while day temperatures stayed above normal in most places.
The forecast for Guwahati and nearby areas indicates a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Temperatures are likely to hover around 33°C (max) and 25°C (min).
The weather system is expected to move slowly northwestward across North Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand. An east-west trough and active monsoon conditions are contributing to increased rainfall across the Northeast.
Meanwhile, Dibrugarh city was submerged once again under a severe artificial flood following heavy rainfall in the early hours of Friday. Several major areas of the town were left inundated, leading to widespread disruption and inconvenience for residents.
