Despite a state-wide ban on the sale and transportation of beef, Assam Police arrested one person and confiscated approximately 200 kg of meat in the Dhubri district on Thursday morning.
After receiving a reliable tip, a squad from the Golakganj Police Station, commanded by Officer-in-Charge Debajit Kalita, conducted the operation in the early hours of the morning. The crew moved quickly to stop a suspicious two-wheeler without a license plate at Biratnagar Chariali on National Highway 17 that was traveling to Gauripur.
The motorcyclist tried to escape after being chased down, but he lost control and crashed. Azizur Rahman, a native of Mansai under the jurisdiction of Bakshirhat Police Station in West Bengal, was arrested by police on the spot while the driver escaped.
When authorities inspected the car, they found about two quintals of beef hidden inside. The scooty and the meat, which is prohibited by state legislation, were confiscated. Authorities believe the shipment was a component of a larger network of cross-border smuggling between Assam and West Bengal.
To find out the size of the illicit trade and track down further participants in the scam, investigations are presently being conducted.
