International Day of Persons with Disabilities Observed

GUWAHATI: December 3 is celebrated as the International Day of People with Disabilities under the aegis of the United Nations to make the world aware of the problems faced by these people as well as mobilise support for their rights, dignity and well-being.

Assam Chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma left a message on Twitter. He said, "On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I pay tribute to the sterling achievements & contributions of our divyang brothers and sisters to India's growth journey. Our Govt is steadfast in our commitment to ensure an equitable society for divyangs."

Several organisations across the state observed the day in their own way. Shishu Sarothi, one of the premier organisations working with specially-abled children organised a puppet show in the afternoon of Saturday near the historic Dighalipukhuri with the theme 'Promoting Inclusive Education'. They also organised a panel discussion entitled ' Breaking Barriers and Creating Opportunities' on Friday.

Another event was organised by Assam's Directorate of Social Justice and Empowerment on the Guwahati Blind High School premises. A mime show was organised by the students of the BDS Government Higher Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired to mark the occasion.

The authorities of the Guwahati Airport also opened a special facilitation desk for specially-abled travellers today. This help desk is located at the departure forecourt of the airport and is aimed to support passengers with limited mobility. The Chief Airport Officer, Utpal Baruah inaugurated this desk in the presence of several other officials. The students of the Purvottar Institute for Persons with disability performed a cultural show on the occasion and were felicitated by Indigo Airlines during the event. The Principal- Director of the institute was also present for the celebration.

The event was organised with a two-day affair in the Bajali district of Assam. Specially abled citizens from across the district were invited to this event and their problems were discussed. The organisers requested the state government to increase the amount of money provided as a Disability Pension.
