DIBRUGARH: Thousands of devotees gathered at the Shri Shri Jagannath Temple in Khanikar, Dibrugarh, to witness the 11th annual Rath Yatra celebration, which marked a historic milestone with the introduction of three separate chariots for the first time in the temple’s history.
The grand procession, held under bright sunny skies, featured individual chariots dedicated to Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath, departing from the traditional single-chariot format that had characterised previous celebrations in Dibrugarh. The ornately decorated chariots, adorned with colourful fabrics, flowers, and traditional motifs, became the centerpiece of this year’s festivities.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Minister Bimal Borah graced the occasion with their presence, joining thousands of devotees who travelled from across the state to participate in the sacred celebration.
“This year’s Rath Yatra holds special significance as we witness the divine trinity travelling in their individual chariots for the first time. The devotion and enthusiasm of the people of Assam toward Lord Jagannath continues to strengthen our cultural and spiritual bonds,” said a committee member.
The temple committee, which has been organizing the annual event since its inception eleven years ago, worked tirelessly for months to prepare the three magnificent chariots. Local artisans and craftsmen contributed their skills to create the elaborate wooden structures, featuring intricate carvings and decorative elements.
The procession began at noon with traditional drum beats, conch shell sounds, and devotional songs filling the air. Devotees pulled the heavy chariots through the streets of Dibrugarh, chanting ‘Jai Jagannath’ and dancing in religious fervour. The route was lined with thousands of spectators who offered prayers and sought blessings from the deities.
Enhanced security arrangements and medical facilities were put in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. The celebration concluded with the traditional ‘prasad’ distribution and evening prayers at the temple.
