Jagiroad: Historic Gova Deoraja Jonbeel Mela ends

The historic Jonbeel Mela enriched with traditional barter which commenced on January 18 at Jonbeel Pathar near Jagiroad ended on Saturday.

JAGIROAD: The historic Jonbeel Mela enriched with traditional barter which commenced on January 18 at Jonbeel Pathar near Jagiroad ended on Saturday. On January 18, the mela began with rituals offered at Deosal Mandir in the morning followed by unfurling of the mela flag by the Mela Development Committee president Soneswar Doloi, Gova Deoraja and Deepsing Deoraja at the mela venue.

Later, Gova Raja attended a community feast and declared formal opening of the mela. A souvenir ‘Jonbeel’ was inaugurated by AASU president Utpal Sarma in the evening. Thousands of people from Meghalaya, Karbi Anglong and other parts of the State flocked into the mela with their native agriculture products and stayed the nights there to exchange the products with each other where no hard coins are used. The barter on January 19 was inaugurated by Morigaon MLA Ramakanta Deuri and was graced by Tiwa Autonomous Council CEM Jiban Chandra Konwar.

The community fishing  at Jonbeel started at 10 am on January 19 followed by cultural event organized by North East Regional Cultural Centre. On the other hand, 19 traditional Tiwa Raja attended the Rajdarbar held on January 19 where the Raj Bhatta to the tune of Rs.1.2 lakh each was distributed by MLA Ramakanta Deuri, CEM Tiwa Autonomous Council Jiban Chandra Pegu and Apurba Deka, PA to the Cabinet Minister and local MLA Pijush Hazarika.
