DIGBOI: While the special layer of security forces were reportedly pushing hard along the Indo-Myanmar border and other vulnerable locations along the Arunachal-Myanmar border to rescue abducted victim Apurba Kakoty, another team of Tinsukia Police engaged in the task held a prime suspect in connection with the abduction on Saturday evening from Lekhapani. The arrested linkman was identified as Hemkanta Basumatary alias Babu of No 2 Phaneng Villages under Lekhapani Police Station in Tinsukia district.

"The arrested prime suspect was involved in the abduction of Kakoty from 10 miles in Jagun on November 20. He was also involved in inducting a Class X female student from Phaneng village earlier," said Mugdhajyoti Mahanta, the Superintendent of Police of Tinsukia. He added, "Bubu has been the most trusted linkman of ULFA leader Udaya Axom who has been frequenting the place for carrying out his nefarious designs along the border locations."

"We have diverted all resources and have been intensifying the rescue operation on a war footing with a primary objective of rescuing the victim unhurt," said Mahanta, adding that all inter-state thick vegetation covered boundary and areas along Indo-Myanmar border had been put on priority for combing as it had been learnt that the group of kidnappers sneaked into its Myanmar base with the abducted victim. According to intelligence inputs, the NSCN (K) rebels were also with the ULFA (I) team when they sneaked into the Myanmar base.

The ULFA had earlier on Thursday morning, in a telephonic conversation with Purna Bora, a local businessman, assured of releasing the hostage Kakoty within a couple of days.
