“A mother’s love liberates” - Maya Angelou
Born on March 25, 1936 in Srihati Satra, Sualkuchi, Jamini Devi Goswami peacefully passed away on February 9, 2023 in Ulubari, Guwahati. At the age of 9 or 10, when India’s independence movement was at its peak, she joined Mahatma Gandhi’s protest march during his Assam visit. The memory was so profound for her that despite suffering from severe dementia in the past one year, she would chant “Door hato ae duniya walon, ye Hindustan humara. Jai Hind” with a fist pump. She was a firebrand.
Jamini Devi Goswami had a fulfilling life with six well established children, their wives and husbands, 14 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a bunch of friends, who were her companions for her weekly temple visit. She was an ardent devotee of lord Shiva. She loved swimming and used to fill us with awe, narrating stories of how she used to swim in the mighty Brahmaputra in her youth. Her grandchildren fondly remember her as their liberal (sometimes even more than parents) and fun loving “Abu”. The entire Goswami clan will immensely miss her scrumptious food. Her sweet memories will continue to enrich our lives even in her absence. Ma/Abu, you have been an inspiration to us. Your unconditional love and blessings will always keep us going.
Goswami family.
