LAKHIMPUR: “Journalism is a profession having its own ethics and strong character. Journalism without ethics cannot do well for the society. It can no longer survive. Only healthy and ethical journalism can bring changes to the society and can exist forever,” said Dilip Chandan in Lakhimpur on Sunday.
Dilip Chandan, the noted novelist-cum-journalist said this while taking part in the open session of the biennial Naoboicha session of the Lakhimpur District Journalists’ Association (LDJA). The event was held in the Naoboicha High School auditorium under the auspices of the Naoboicha Press Club with a day-long programme.
The open session commenced with LDJA president Kumud Baruah in the chair and under the management of secretary Manoj Borpatra Gohain. The agenda of the open session kickstarted with a patriotic chorus song presented by the students of the school. It was inaugurated by Dr Gunindra Sarmah, the Principal of Naoboicha College, while reception committee president Tikendrajit Baruah, the headmaster of the school, delivered the welcome address.
Addressing the gathering of over hundred journalists of Lakhimpur along with prominent citizens and local public, Dilip Chandan further said, “The profession of journalism has witnessed many changes at present. At the same time, the profession has to face with many challenges too. But, I think the challenges are transient. Journalists must overcome the challenges by coping up them to proceed.”
He laid stress on re-orientation and re-organization of the journalistic thoughts. President of Assam Union of Working Journalists (Bartajeevee Sangha-AUWJ), Tutumoni Phukan attended the event as distinguished guest. While delivering his lecture Phukan said, “Journalism is a prestigious profession. The prestige of the profession can be protected if the profession attains social, legal and financial security.”
On the other hand, AUWJ secretary Mukut Raj Sarmah, attending the event as guest of honour, said that the rights of journalists must be secured. In the same event, journalist Sailen Baruah inaugurated a book titled Sangbadik-Asangbadik, written by former AUWJ president Keshab Kalita. Keshab Kalita delivered a brief speech on the book. On the other hand, Mandira Chayengiya, the District Information and Public Relation Officer of Lakhimpur, ceremonially released Bedanidhi the mouthpiece of the LDJA.
Earlier in the morning, the day-long agenda of the biennial Naoboicha session of the LDJA started with the unfurling of the organizational flag by president Kumud Baruah. Then LDJA secretary Manoj Borpatra Gohain, reception committee joint secretaries Nitul Borah, Anjan Upadhyay conducted the swahid tarpan and smriti tarpan programmes. It was followed by the delegates’ session of the LDJA, which commenced with president Kumud Baruah in the chair. The delegates’ session was inaugurated by Surajit Bhuyan, the former member of Indian Union of Working Journalists.
In the programme, secretary Manoj Borpatra Gohain submitted the secretarial report of the last session while auditor Diganta Sonowal submitted the audit report. In the same programme, the 31-member new executive body of the LDJA was constituted with Sailen Baruah as president, Kumud Baruah as working president, Mukul Bhuyan as secretary. The delegates session adopted a slew of resolutions to create a corpus fund for the welfare of the journalists of the district, to pressurize the government to implement journalists’ life insurance scheme, to pay salary to the rural journalists, and to resolve the flood and deplorable road communication of the Naoboicha constituency along with Assam-Arunachal border issues etc.
