KHERONI: A delegation from Karbi Anglong, led by Tuliram Ronghang and representatives of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), met with Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram, and Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, in New Delhi on Wednesday to submit memoranda addressing key developmental needs for the tribal and minority communities in Karbi Anglong.

During the meeting with Jual Oram, the delegation expressed gratitude for the allocation of Rs 257 crore under the ‘DHARTI AABA JANJATIYA GRAM UTKARSH ABHIYAN,’ which will benefit 66 rural schools in Karbi Anglong’s tribal areas. This significant grant is set to enhance access to quality education in the region’s hilly terrain, bolstering educational infrastructure and opportunities for tribal students.

The delegation, led by Tuliram Ronghang, also submitted a memorandum requesting the establishment of Ekalavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) in each of the 26 KAAC constituencies. With four schools already sanctioned, they appealed for an additional 22 to ensure comprehensive educational coverage. Additionally, they proposed the creation of a Tribal Multi-utility Convention Centre at Diphu to foster inter-tribe harmony and cooperation.

In a separate meeting with Kiren Rijiju, the delegation presented a detailed memorandum aligned with Clause 2.4 of the Tripartite Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed on September 4, 2021, which entrusts KAAC with the welfare and development of minority communities and indigenous faiths. Key proposals included recognition and support for both religious and ethnic minorities in Karbi Anglong, establishment of multipurpose convention centres in minority-dominated areas across all KAAC constituencies, special focus on unrepresented and vulnerable ethnic groups, including the Rengma Naga, Man-Tai, Khasi sub-tribes, Garos, Kukis, and Sakacheps, development projects in entrepreneurship, horticulture, and tourism tailored for minority communities, and a special package for the promotion and protection of Aronbarim, the indigenous Karbi faith, including the establishment of a religious centre at Langvoku.

The delegation included prominent leaders such as MPs Amarsing Tisso, Dilip Saikia, and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLAs Darsing Ronghang (Howraghat), Bidya Sing Engleng (Diphu), and Rupsing Teron (Baithalangso), KAAC Executive Members Surjya Rongphar, MAC Dr Mongve Rongpi, former MP and Ex-CEM Dr Jayanta Rongpi, and Khorsing Teron, among others.

These initiatives reflected KAAC’s commitment to advancing education, cultural preservation, and socio-economic development for the tribal and minority communities of Karbi Anglong, paving the way for inclusive growth and harmony in the region.
