Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized World Fisheries Day in Dima Hasao

HAFLONG: With rest of the world, the World Fisheries Day organized by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dima Hasao was celebrated at Hatikhali under Maibang block in the presence of Bimal Hojai, MAC, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council as the chief guest on Saturday.

The aim and objective of the day was to highlight the problems regarding fisheries, and moves towards finding solutions to the increasingly inter-connected problems that the people are facing and in the longer term, to sustainable means of maintaining fish stocks.

The programme was commenced with a presentation by Rashmita Saikia, Senior Scientist & Head on the Mandate activities of Krishi Vigyan Kendra for the overall Development of the district's Agri-allied sector. In the programme Kabin Medhi (Subject Matter Specialist –Fisheries Science) delivered a lecture on the topic which emphasized the 'Significance of celebrating the World Fisheries Day' in terms of food, nutrition and livelihood security, through sustainable fishing from capture fisheries, conservation and protection of our indigenous fish stocks and sustainable culture through adoption of scientific fish farming with aim to promote economic growth of the country.

Chief guest Bimal Hojai, (MAC, NCHAC), also emphasized on conservation of indigenous fish stocks for sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture and explained about the various scope fisheries and make the district self-sufficient on fish availability. There was also a brief presentation by Dr N. Manoranjan Singh (Programme Assistant –Veterinary) on the topic 'Scope of integration of livestock in hill fish farming system' in the district for enhancing additional income. On this occasion interaction between farmers and scientists was also held where farmers discussed about their issues regarding fish farming and its relevant aspects. As many as 60 farmers participated in the programme.

On this special occasion, fisheries bulletin and advisories were also provided to the farmers. The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks by Utpal Mishra, social worker.
