SILCHAR: The latent ego clash between Minister Krishnendu Paul and MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha finally erupted as a supporter of the former in a social media live stream threatened to burn the latter. Supporters of Purkayastha, who was still a Congress MLA but openly declared his allegiance towards the BJP, lodged a complaint against Sankar Kanu of the minister’s camp. The incident cast such an impact on the saffron brigade that Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma intervened by reminding his Cabinet colleague that a public representative should have control over his supporters. The state BJP President, Dilip Saikia, on the other hand, said that a true BJP worker should never threaten anyone. Senior BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das said that whether Kanu was a party member or not had to be ascertained first.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, once the most vocal critic of the BJP government, suddenly shifted his allegiance towards the ruling party. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had reportedly instructed him to work in Katigorah instead of North Karimganj, the constituency he had been representing in the Assembly for the last three consecutive terms as a Congress MLA. Since then, Purkayastha has planted his feet in Katigorah amid much resistance from the local BJP leaders. During the last Panchayat election, Minister Krishnendu Paul in a rally in Katigorah assured that the party would field a local candidate, sending a clear message to Purkayastha. A few days back, Paul in a party meeting in Sribhumi openly said that North Karimganj had been lagging behind in development during the Congress MLA’s period.

Purkayastha, on the other hand, has till now avoided any open remarks on the issue.
