DIPHU: The Karbi Students' Association (KSA) Hamren Regional Committee has strongly condemned several political parties from Meghalaya for illegally entering and campaigning in West Karbi Anglong ahead of the upcoming MDC elections.
In a press release issued on February 20, the KSA called this act a violation of electoral rules and an infringement on the territorial integrity of West Karbi Anglong.
The student organization urged the citizens of West Karbi Anglong, especially those living in border areas, to avoid participating in Meghalaya's elections. The KSA emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the region and respecting administrative boundaries.
Additionally, the KSA expressed its support for all communities, particularly the Khasi-Pnar people living in West Karbi Anglong, who may feel insecure or face challenges due to the situation. The association reassured them that they can always approach the KSA for assistance and support.
Meanwhile, illegal sand mining in the border areas of West Karbi Anglong and Hojai, particularly at Jorashimolu, is causing environmental damage and disturbing local peace. The intense mining activity on the Kopili River has damaged roads and polluted the area.
Locals, including students, struggle to navigate due to machinery and trucks. Despite efforts by Hojai BJP MLA Ramkrishna Ghosh to stop the activity, mining resumed quickly.
Residents, protesting against the illegal mining, claimed that the forest department and administration are failing to act. In November, various organizations from Assam and Meghalaya held a rally to express frustration over the government's inaction.
