LAKHIMPUR: After a long wait, positive news regarding the upgrade of road communication in Lakhimpur has brought hope to the people of the district. The Lakhimpur bypass will be inaugurated and dedicated to the people in the month of March in the upcoming year.

Notably, the bypass was a long-cherished dream to the people of the district. The construction of the bypass with a length of 12.51 km began on October 12, 2012. Though the construction work of the bypass was to be completed within three years, the construction company DRA TKEE (JV) could not complete it within a period of six years. As a result, the construction company had to extend the deadline of completing the work four times causing discontentment among the people of the district.

The company completed the construction of the 10.50 km stretch of the bypass before 2015 while the company took more than three years to complete the construction of the remaining 2.01 km stretch. This has resulted in massive traffic congestion in North Lakhimpur town throughout the years.

The traffic congestion became extensive after the Bogibeel Bridge over the Brahmaputra, connecting North Assam with Upper Assam, was inaugurated on December 25, 2018. Regarding the issue, a detailed report was published in The Sentinel some months back.

However, the bypass concerned is signified as the longest bypass of North Assam. Though the construction work of the bypass is yet to be completed, heavy vehicles can pass over the completed portion at present.

Significantly, it is known that the construction work was delayed due to the anomalies regarding the shifting of High Tower (HT) wires transporting high volt electricity.
