TEZPUR: The 72 Assam Girls (Independent) Company NCC has been enrolling girls from Lakhimpur and Dhemaji as NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets since 1963. At present it is led by Commanding Officer (CO) Col Jasbir Singh Cheema with his committed army and civil staff.

A few of the colleges covered by them are Girls' College NLP, LTK College Azad, Girls' College, Dhemaji and Dhemaji College. The NCC has a three-year programme for college students and two-year programme for school girls. Besides teaching the cadets about Army subjects, the NCC aims to make these cadets the future leaders of the country. In order to achieve this, a number of social service projects are taken up by the NCC.

Under the social awareness programme on World Environment Day, NCC cadets celebrated the day by taking an oath to protect the environment as an 'environmental warrior'. The cadets of 72 Assam Girls Company NCC urged people to give up plastic, save water and to keep the surroundings clean.

A tree plantation drive was undertaken at the public library premises of North Lakhimpur town. Besides planting saplings there, the NCC cadets took saplings to plant in their homes. The saplings of fruit trees were also distributed among people.
