LAKHIMPUR: Amid the ongoing investigation into the ‘mysterious’ death of SI Junmoni Rabha and the alleged link of a section of police officers with fake gold and fake currency smugglers’ racket, which has surfaced after her death, Government of Assam has made significant changes in the police administration covering Lakhimpur district. As per the changes, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa has been transferred from Lakhimpur and Anand Mishra, an IPS officer, has been appointed as the new SP of the same district. Similarly, SP of Nagaon, Leena Doley has been transferred to Hailakandi while Navneet Mahanta has been posted as new SP of Nagaon.
Earlier, ASP Runa Neog, who was posted in Lakhimpur in 2017, was transferred from the district. After the death of Junmoni Rabha, Runa Neog was alleged of being involved in the fake gold and counterfeit note nexus, which is active at Bangalmora under the district. In an order dated May 9, she was transferred from Lakhimpur and was posted as senior staff officer to chief controller, village defence organization, Assam, Guwahati. The order read, “In the interest of public service, Smti. Runa Neog, APS (DR-2015), Additional Superintendent of Police (Head Quarter), Lakhimpur is transferred and posted as Sr. Staff Officer to Chief Controller, Village Defence Organisation, Assam, Guwahati with effect from the date of taking over charge vice Shri Munindra Nath Deuri, APS transferred.
Thereafter, in a significant development related to the Junmoni Rabha accident and death case, the Assam Police Headquarters transferred two Police Officers serving in Lakhimpur district along with two of Nagaon district, as part of action taken to ensure a fair investigation. These Police Officers are–Inspector Bhaskar Kalita, OC North Lakhimpur Police Station, SI Sanjib Bora, IC Naoboisha Outpost, Rupiyoti Kalita, APS, Addl.SP(Crime), Nagaon, Inspector Manoj Rajbongshi, OC Nagaon, Sadar Police Station.
As per an order issued May 19, these four police officers have been transferred to the headquarters for their involvement in the ongoing cases. The transfer order pertains to multiple cases, including Jakhalabandha PS Case No. 84/23 under sections 443/23 and U/S 489(A)/489(B) IPC, as well as Nagaon PS Case No., Jakhalabandha PS Case No. 87/23 U/S 120B/302/34 IPC, and North Lakhimpur PS Case No. 183/23 U/S 120B/395/397/342/387 IPC.
On the other hand, new SP Ananda Mishra arrived in Lakhimpur around 8:00 pm on Sunday. In a brief interaction with the media persons just after his arrival, Ananda Mishra said he would initiate stern action against fake gold, fake currency smugglers, anti-social and illegal activities as per law. He will assume charge as new SP of Lakhimpur on Sunday night.
