Bajali: A late-night raid conducted by Sarupeta Police in the Puthimari area of Bajali district on 18th July, led to the seizure of four cartons of illegal liquor, reigniting public outrage over the unchecked spread of the illicit liquor trade in the region. The operation, reportedly prompted by repeated complaints from vigilant residents, targeted a shop long suspected of selling illegal alcohol. Although the raid confirmed these suspicions, the shop owner managed to flee upon learning of the police's approach.

The bust has once again placed a harsh spotlight on the alleged thriving bootlegging network operating in Bajali, reportedly under the nose of local authorities. Residents have accused certain officials from the Bajali Excise Department of colluding with bootleggers or deliberately ignoring illegal activities, thereby enabling the illicit trade to flourish.

“The same shop has been operating freely for a long time. We have complained multiple times, but no serious action was taken,” said a concerned local resident. The latest raid, though welcomed, has reignited demands for accountability and stricter enforcement. The incident underscores growing frustration among locals who claim that despite police efforts, systemic corruption and administrative negligence continue to hamper long-term solutions to the problem.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the escape of the suspect or the allegations against the excise department. However, residents are calling for an independent investigation into the alleged nexus and immediate action against those involved.
