LAKHIMPUR: "Just commemorating Lachit Barphukan on a single day is not enough of what is done to keep him alive. While most Indians have heard of other heroes of the nation, they are ignorant about General Lachit Barphukan of Assam. We must spread his patriotic ideology far and wide. Lessons about him must be incorporated in the academic courses of the nation," stated academician Debojani Burhagohain in Lakhimpur on Thursday. She said so while delivering lecture as appointed speaker of the open session organized in connection with the central celebration of the Lachit Divas by Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad, Asom (HYCPA).

She further said research should be conducted to bring the still unknown facts of the history of Lachit Barphukan's period to light. She added that that systematic study might bring out more things about Lachit Barphukan if the State Government initiated steps in this connection.

The open session commenced with Madhav Hazarika, the president of the reception committee, in the chair. It was held under the management of HYCPA central committee general secretary Madhav Das. President Balen Baishya took part in the programme as another speaker. He said that present generations should render their dedicated services to build the nation by following the patriotic ideology of Lachit Barphukan. He added that Lachit Barphukan should be a role model for the youths of Assam because of his valour, patriotism, perseverance and will power. Janardan Goswami, the Xatradhikar of Dhakhinpat Grihashshrsmi Xatra, took part in the event as guest of honour.

Notably, HYCPA celebrated Lachit Divas centrally in the Lakhimpur district at Tyag-Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town with a two-day long programme. The first day's agenda of the event on Wednesday began with the unfurling of organizational flag by Lakhimpur district HYCPA president Jugmajyoti Dutta. It was followed by a series of competitions on Lachit Barphukan among the students. Social worker Babul Borah inaugurated a trade fair while North Lakhimpur Pensioners' Association president Gunaram Narah inaugurated the fair of local cuisines.

On the second day on Thursday, reception committee secretary, academician Dr Ramesh Kumar Kakati garlanded the statue of Lachit Borphukan and lit the ceremonial lamp. It was followed by a colourful cultural procession covering the North Lakhimpur town. Various cultural groups from different indigenous communities of the State showcased their native culture in the procession to disseminate the message of unity in diversity. Popular actresses Amrita Gogoi, Zarina Baruah, DID first runner-up-cum-popular kid dancer Appun Pegu took part in the cultural procession.
