DIGBOI: Local organizations, including the Gorkha Students’ Union, AATTSA, Digboi Yuva Samaj and Kherjan Dhekiajan youth body, have decided to launch crackdown on the menace of drug abuse in the Kherjan -Dhekiajan area under Digboi Police Station in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam. The youth bodies informed The Sentinel on Tuesday about their crusade against drug abuse.

“The coordinated efforts of the student and other local bodies would definitely bring in desirable output in this regard and save the lives of the youths and students of nearby 10 more villages,” said a Gorkha activist of Kherjan, adding, “The matter will be seriously taken up during the general meeting of the Gorkha Students’ Union slated on Sunday at Kherjan.”

Following the publication of a news item by The Sentinel on November 12, highlighting the menace of drug abuse in the area, the student organizations vowed to fight tooth and nail and resolved to act immediately against sellers and consumers of the contraband substance.

The local police and civil administration have miserably failed in their efforts to curb the menace. Though few arrests and apprehensions were made in the wake of allegations the peddlers were hardly prosecuted under NDPS Act, alleged the student organizations.
