Bokajan: In a surprising turn of events on Independence Day, media personnel in Bokajan were denied entry to the sub-division’s official celebration despite having been formally invited for coverage. The incident has sparked outrage among local journalists, who have called it a blatant act of disrespect toward the press.
According to reports, the Bokajan Sub-Divisional Administration had extended invitations to the media to attend and cover the Independence Day celebrations. However, upon arrival, journalists were allegedly stopped by the magistrate of the sub-division and prohibited from entering the venue. Additional Deputy Inspector Mridul Baruah and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Minakshi Borgohain have been named by media representatives as the officials responsible for denying access.
Terming the act “an ultimate disrespect to the media fraternity,” journalists reminded that the press is widely regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy, playing a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability. They have demanded an official clarification from the administration and resolved to boycott all police and administrative programmes in the region until an explanation is provided.
The incident has raised concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists, especially on a day meant to celebrate India’s democratic values and the sacrifices made for independence.
