LAKHIMPUR: "Media must play a pivotal role in order to build a society free of discrimination. In this regard, the media must shoulder accountability. Lack of accountability of the media corrodes public respect. They should publish or broadcast their reports with impartiality and transparency. They must make all communities aware of their respective issues to ensure their amelioration," Diganta Hatibaruah, the columnist-cum-Head of the Department of Political Science, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) said on Tuesday in Lakhimpur. He said so while delivering his lecture on the occasion of the National Press Day celebration organized by Lakhimpur district administration.
Lakhimpur district administration celebrated the National Press Day in association with the District Information and Public Relation Department and Boginadi Press Club in the auditorium of the Gaon Pradhans' conference Hall at Boginadi. The programme organized on the occasion under the management of Boginadi Press Club adviser Majin Sonowal started with the presentation of Asom Sangeet. It was chaired by Punyakanta Mili, the working president of Dullung Subansiri Conservation Society. Boginadi Press Club president Diganta Sonowal delivered the welcome address. District Information and Public Relation Officer Mandira Chayengia explained the objective of the event laying stress on the physical, financial security of the working journalists.
Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur Sumit Sattawan attended the programme as the chief guest. In his lecture, the Deputy Commissioner made a brief explanation about the history and role of press in pre-independent and post-independent India. He lauded the mediapersons of the district for playing active and cooperative role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic situation and other issues of the district. Appointed speaker Diganta Hatibaruah delivered his lecture on 'Who is not afraid of media', the theme of the National Press Day, 2021.
"Threats come to the life of the journalists from various angles. They have to make supreme sacrifice while performing their works, while rendering their sincere service to the society. It proves that some people of the society are afraid of media," the appointed speaker asserted while emphasizing on the accountability, accuracy, transparency, impartiality of the news being reported and published. He added that media must study the future of a society, the State and the nation along with the present issues. Litterateur Bharat Rajkhowa was present in the programme as a special guest.
Senior journalists of Lakhimpur Kumud Baruah, Alok Chamuah, Ranjit Kakati, Priyamjyoti Phukan, Kushal Saikia also delivered lectures on the designated theme and issues of the journalists. The members of Boginadi Press Club presented a song titled 'Sweta Ganga' composed by Majin Sonowal on Boginadi river in the programme. The district administration feted the journalists of the district with aphulam gamosa on the occasion of the event, celebration of which concluded with the National Anthem.
