DHEKIAJULI: In a strong response to the brutal assault on journalists allegedly carried out by members of the sand and stone mafia in Panchnoi, the Dhekiajuli co-district committee of the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU) submitted a memorandum on Tuesday to the Dhekiajuli Co-District Commissioner, demanding swift and stringent action against those responsible.

The memorandum was formally handed over during a meeting held at the Dhekiajuli Municipality Board Auditorium at approximately 2:30 PM. The APCU delegation, led by Kalpajyoti Nath, Secretary of the Dhekiajuli APCU Committee, condemned the recent attacks on ND24 journalist Bimaljyoti Nath and freelance reporter Bipul Phayel. Both journalists were reportedly assaulted by an organized group involved in illegal sand and gravel mining operations in the region.

Accompanying the delegation were prominent APCU leaders including Sujit Kataki, President, Tapan Sen Gupta, Executive President, Diganta Sarma, Executive Secretary, Soni Daimari, Deputy Secretary, along with other distinguished members of the Dhekiajuli co-district committee. Naba Kumar Deka, representing the Udalguri district unit of APCU, was also present to express solidarity.

Upon receiving the memorandum, Dhekiajuli Co-District Commissioner Dyotibha Bora acknowledged the gravity of the situation. She informed the delegation that preliminary action had already been initiated against the accused and emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and rights of journalists.

“The administration will not tolerate such acts of intimidation. All concerns raised by the journalists’ union will be addressed with utmost diligence,” she assured.

The proactive step taken by the APCU has drawn widespread support from the journalistic community, with increasing demands for robust safety measures and protections for media personnel covering sensitive issues such as illegal mining activities.
