TEZPUR: Prominent human rights activist Dr Parashmani Singha, son of the former Member of Parliament, Late Dr Purna Narayan Singha, submitted two separate memorandums one to the Ministry of Railways and another to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking the introduction of new train services from Tezpur and the naming of the Chowkighat Bridge in honour of his father.
In the first memorandum, Dr Singha appealed for the commencement of three new trains from Tezpur Dekargaon Railway Station to New Delhi, Howrah, and Chennai. Highlighting the longstanding demands of the region’s residents, he recalled that a similar request was made earlier on July 31, 2019, which remained unfulfilled. With public demand growing stronger, the memorandum was resubmitted to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, urging prompt action.
In the second memorandum, Dr Singha called for naming the bridge connecting Tezpur and Jamugurihat at Chowkighat after the Late Dr Purna Narayan Singha. He noted that the former MP had not only envisioned the construction of the Jiabharali River Bridge but had also taken early initiatives toward its realization, though the project was only completed years later under the BJP-led government.
The memorandums, endorsed by several prominent citizens from Tezpur and the undivided Sonitpur district, highlight Dr Purna Narayan Singha’s lasting contributions and vision for the region’s infrastructural development. The now-completed Chowkighat Bridge has significantly improved regional connectivity, and the appeal aims to honour his legacy by naming the bridge after him.
Dr Parashmani Singha expressed hope that both demands would receive due consideration in recognition of the region’s needs and the late MP’s visionary leadership.
