Guwahati: The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Assam’s proposal to establish a Services Selection Board (SSB) Centre in Guwahati is actively under consideration. This was communicated in a letter from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 6.
Chief Minister Sarma had written to the ministry on February 20, emphasizing the need for a local SSB centre to facilitate officer selection for the Indian Armed Forces and encourage youth from the Northeast to pursue defence careers. He highlighted accessibility challenges, noting that existing centres are located in other regions, making it difficult for local candidates to attend.
To support the proposal, Sarma assured the availability of vacant military land in Guwahati for establishing the SSB centre.
Following the communication from the Defence Minister, Sarma extended his gratitude, stating the SSB centre would greatly benefit youth from the Northeastern region.
