Month-long mental health programme concludes at Tezpur

Tezpur: A month-long mental health programme organized by LGBRIMH on the occasion of World Mental Health Day successfully concluded on Saturday.

The programme had commenced on October 8. This year’s theme of World Mental Health Day is ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’. During the month-long observance of World Mental Health Day, faculty, staff and students from the different departments of LGBRIMH, conducted several outreach programmes in schools and colleges, community mental health camps and public mental health awareness and promotion activities. Youth from various college campuses in and around Tezpur engaged in several contests on mental health-based themes.

The day-long valedictory programme commenced on Saturday with the judging of poster-making, slogan-writing and mobile photography contests. Writer and TV personality Maini Mahanta was the chief guest of the day. Dr Sonia P Deuri, chairperson of the programme and Professor, Department of Psychiatric Social Work, gave the welcome address. Dr. Diptarup Chowdhury, organizing secretary and Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Psychology, read out the report of the month-long programme and ‘Yuva Mann-Meet’.

Principals of various colleges in Tezpur and persons who contributed significantly to this month-long programme were felicitated by Dr Aparajeeta Baruah, advisor of the programme and Professor of Department of Psychiatry, LGBRIMH. This was followed by the address by the chief guest Maini Mahanta. An exhibition titled ‘Yuva-Mann-Meet’ was inaugurated by the chief guest.

The valedictory day function in the afternoon started with screening of short films based on mental health issues. A discussion on these films was led by Dr. Joya Chakraborty, Associate Professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University and Dr. Nurnahar Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatric Nursing. Students from LGBRIMH and other colleges participated in a skit competition.

The staff and students of LGBRIMH put up a group dance ‘Rupohi Axom’ which reflected the amalgamation of different cultures of Assam. This was followed by a prize distribution ceremony for various competitions held during this month-long programme. The audience took a mental health oath which was led by Dr. Diptorup Chowdhury and Lakhyahira Borah, Clinical Psychologist, Department of Clinical Psychologist.
