GUWAHATI: Assam police and the local administration had to exhume a body that was buried around six months ago to verify it was the same man who was reported to have been kidnapped around the same time.
Assam police had recently arrested multiple people who were allegedly connected to the kidnapping of one Biswajit Hazarika. The incident took place in the month of October last year an the kidnappers had put forward a demand of Rs 40 lakhs to his family as the ransom for his release.
But the kidnappers never came to collect the ransom and Biswajit Hazarika remained missing. Last month Assam Pollice had arrested six persons in connection to the case, who had told that the person was murdered and the body was disposed of somewhere in the Nellie region of the Morigaon district of Assam.
Based on these statements, Guwahati Police had reached out to their Morigaon counterparts. Morigaon’s Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das also mentioned that a team with Guwahati Police reached out to them about the body recently.
“A body was recovered in Nellie police outpost area in November. As the body was not identified after 72 hours of its recovery, we buried it as per the procedure,” mentioned Hemanta Kumar Das. “Today, it was disinterred today in presence of an executive magistrate and forensic experts,” he added telling about the actions taken today by the experts' team.
“The identity will be confirmed by the experts after due investigation, but it is believed to be that of Biswajit Hazarika, who was kidnapped from Guwahati,” said the Superintendent of Police
If the body is proven to be of Biswajit Hazarika after the necessary tests, it will bring a long-running police investigation to an end. This will also prove to be a success of the Assam police team.
